Do you have it? Symptoms include feelings of overwhelm, resentment, anxiety and failure. If you’re afflicted you’re probably also chronically tired. The cherry on top of this unhappy sundae includes short episodes of you losing your s**t, usually about once a month. What’s going on? What are you so angry about anyway?

You think these surprising emotional episodes are about your hormones, but while hormones play a part, they are not the answer. Your hormonal cycle provides you with an important window every month. This window usually lasts between 1-3 days.

It is a point-in- time where you simply cannot tolerate the bull you normally put up with, so you blow. This window should not be feared. It should be welcomed and studied. It will show you every place in your life where you have to stop saying yes when you mean no.

How about you? How often do you say yes when you really mean no?

Do you spend your time, attention and energy on only what matters to you, or have you committed your life to people pleasing? How often do you find yourself doing favors that you secretly resent? How many committees do you serve on, dinners do you attend, and potlucks do you cook for? How often do you hang out with people you don’t even like?

Doesn’t it make sense that putting everyone else’s needs before your own, and spending your time taking care of everyone but you is a recipe for a little anger? Rather than make yourself wrong for your frustration, let’s eradicate the frustration why don’t we? There is one sure way to do that.

I want you to learn to say NO like you mean it.

I’ve been working with women for more than 12 years. Even the bravest and most accomplished have a hard time with this skill. It could save your life – the quality of it anyway. The formula is simple. Let’s take it in four steps.

Step 1: Know what YES looks like.
Step 2: Understand opportunity cost.
Step 3: Learn to delay and dodge.
Step 4: Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
